Big, glossy cloisonné beads in turquoise, brick red and cobalt blue, each one covered in enamel flowers and fine wire scrollwork. Small gold-tone beads sit between them so every flower has room to show, and the designs change from bead to bead. Bold enough to be the only thing you wear.
What is a cloisonné bead?
A cloisonné bead is a handcrafted decorative bead made by fusing enamel onto a metal bead base.
The process begins with a blank metal bead (usually copper, brass, or silver). Artisans solder thin metal wires or strips onto the surface to map out intricate designs, such as flowers or geometric patterns. These wire borders create tiny cells called "cloisons" (French for partitions or compartments).
Each compartment is then filled with a paste made of colored glass powder. The bead is fired in a kiln at high temperatures, melting the powder into a smooth, glossy glass enamel. Because the enamel shrinks as it melts, this process of filling and firing is often repeated multiple times. Finally, the bead is ground down and polished until the metal wire work sits flush with the vibrant glass surface, creating a smooth, durable, and highly detailed miniature work of art.
